Recording Sizing Instructions

Record on the job envelope both the current size of the ring and the desired size.  For example: Please size from 5 1/2 to 6 1/2.  This avoids confusion later.

At times, the instructions are given to size a ring to a particular size.  When the jeweler starts to size the ring, the ring is already the size written on the envelope.  Then the salesperson needs to call the customer.  Often, they need to come back into the store to have their finger re-measured.  This is all needed to find out why you are sizing a ring that apparently does not need to be sized.  This adds a lot of time, costing the store money, and it looks very unprofessional to the customer.

When recording sizing instructions, also measure and record the shank’s width and thickness to the tenth of a millimeter.  For example, shank 1.6mm thick, 2.7mm wide.

This protects you if the customer says that sizing thinned the shank too much; you can measure the shank and show it is the same size as at take-in.  Any shank within 0.1mm is acceptable.  This takes a little additional work and time at take-in, but it may save you later from having to do a no-charge half-shank or full-shank.
