Have safety equipment, such as smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, installed, accessible, and maintained.

Keep walkways to and from the polishing machine and sink area open and free from clutter.

A well-organized and uncluttered space, where all workers can get to everything easily, will add professionalism to your workshop.  A tidy, well-planned and properly equipped work environment will increase productivity.  Most of all you should organize your workshop in a way that is efficient for you.  You should derive pleasure from the organization and decor of your workshop.  It will indirectly affect your mood, and the quality and quantity of your work.

Fasten down foot petals on your flex shaft and steamer.

Minimize wasted effort by using efficient work triangles between your supplies, the tool being used, and your workbench.

Keep supplies of small attachment for your flex-shaft such as abrasive wheels, rubber wheels, separating discs, polishing disk, etc. in one of those multi drawer plastic cabinets.  Then, glue either an actual sample of the item or a picture of the item from a tool catalog of the item to the front of the drawer.  This makes it easy to find what is inside each drawer.

Design shop components to minimize clean up.  Remember that any dust generated in the jewelry shop may contain gold particles.  A clean shop increases profits through the recovery of that gold.  It also makes the shop more visually appealing, thereby increasing productivity.

When selecting materials for walls or building storage, keep in mind that dust will settle on any horizontal surface.  This adds to the time needed to clean.

Have as much closed storage as possible.  Doors on cabinets or shelves make the shop look neat and keep everything inside cleaner.  The inside of the doors can be fitted with holders or pegboard for tool storage.  Install strips of wood on the bottom of low shelves and cabinets.  Then you will not need to constantly sweep underneath, and stones and other small parts can not roll under them.

Use latches on doors instead of knobs to allow opening when hands are full, or in emergencies.
